What Causes Neck Pain?

When your neck hurts it can be a real “pain in the neck.” Many people suffer from neck pain at some point in their lives. If you watch TV, listen to the radio or read the paper you will constantly see advertisements that offer relief from neck pain. You have probably seen everything from pillows, neck braces, hanging upside down or any number of rub on creams offering the promise of pain relief.

What causes neck pain?

Neck pain can be caused by trauma such as a whiplash from a car crash. Rapid flexion and extension of the head upon impact causes muscles and tendons to be overstretched (sprain/strain). Chronic repetitive stress can also cause neck pain. In today’s technological society, many individuals spend their day in front of a computer. This repetitive trauma causes a strain on the muscles of the neck especially if you work on a lap top or your work area is not ergonomically correct. Poor posture from slouching causes a strain on the neck because your head is forward to your spine. Grandma was right! You need to sit and stand upright. Lack of exercise leads to weaker muscles which makes supporting the weight of the head more difficult to achieve. As we get older, we may develop arthritis in the joints of the neck especially if you have had past trauma or repetitive trauma.

Neck pain is a problem!

Pain is a warning sign like the red light that comes on the dash of your car. You can put up with it or ignore it for a while, but eventually the pain can become worse and may even interfere with your lifestyle. When that happens you may start to avoid activity, your work can suffer, and being there for your family can be a problem. If your neck continues to deteriorate you could find yourself depending on pain medications or in a worst case scenario, find yourself talking to a surgeon.
